Compress PDF
Reduce the size of a PDF for email and portals. We show what takes up space and tune the compression to the size you need. Text stays text.
What the tool can do
- Before compression, the “anatomy” of the file is shown: how much space is taken by images, fonts, text and attachments. You can see right away whether compression will help.
- Four compression levels: from barely noticeable to maximum. JPEG images and uncompressed images are recompressed; text and vector graphics stay unchanged.
- The “Fit within (MB)” field: enter the limit of a portal or email, and the tool picks the gentlest compression that gives the required size.
- Unneeded objects, page thumbnails and (optionally) metadata — author, program, dates — are removed.
- An image is replaced only if the new version is noticeably smaller, so the file cannot get worse. If there is nothing to compress, you will see a message about it.
Compression reduces image quality: the stronger the level, the more noticeable the difference when zoomed in. The original is not changed; a new copy is downloaded.
Scans in a single layer (CCITT, JBIG2) and black-and-white images are usually already compressed, so their size does not change. Files with almost no images shrink only slightly.
